Jeannine Horn has been an educator at Houston Community College System since 1982, working at various campuses in the system, but she decided to make Southeast College her permanent "home" in 1992, when it first opened. She has taught developmental English, academic English, Spanish, and several business courses.

Mrs. Horn is a native Houstonian who graduated from Milby High School and the University of Houston--University Park, where she earned a B.A. in English and an M.Ed., with a graduate specialty in English. Her minor fields are Business and Spanish.

Before coming to HCCS, Mrs. Horn first worked as a Personnel Manager in several companies before she began teaching in Dickinson Independent School District and in various non-credit programs in Houston.  She worked six years in HCCS Human Resources as an administrative assistant to the Dean of Personnel Services and as an adjunct instructor in the evenings.

Mrs. Horn has served on various systemwide committees and has enthusiastically sponsored students for Phi Theta Kappa, and other scholarships; two former students were former Foundation and Janice Sutton winners. She has also had a few students essays’ published in The Egalitarian, the college’s newspaper, and displays many student essays on her web page. Since 2000, Mrs. Horn has enthusiastically recognized students’ talents by serving as a judge and reader in the annual writing contest,  "El Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), and the 2001 Narrative Essay Contest that celebrated Valentine’s Day. Similarly, she sponsored former students for the Outstanding Student Award in English Studies in 2000 and 2001, and in spring 2001, a former student was given this prestigious award. She has served as the Door Prize Chair for the Student Leadership Conference in April 2002 at Eastside. This, too, is a project which has been funded for five years to link high school students with Southeast College student leaders, to train students to be leaders, and to introduce them to the many rewards of serving as a volunteer in their community. In her quest to broaden her teaching profession, Mrs. Horn continues to attend writing workshops and conferences.

Convinced of the value of professional growth, Mrs. Horn has attended many conferences in Texas and outside the state.

Mrs. Horn is a 1998 winner of the Faculty Excellence Award, sponsored annually by the Faculty Association Council, to recognize outstanding teaching, and a Paul Harris Fellow Award recipient, given by The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International for community service work. Furthermore, she is the co-writer of a grant entitled, "On the Road to Citizenship," and has received two Bedichek Professional Enrichment Grants.  She has authored  several articles about student achievements in the system's newspaper.

A strong student advocate, Mrs. Horn encourages students to take charge of their life, take risks, be accountable, and to become actively involved in their college education by being a lifetime learner. As coordinator of the English Tutoring Program, she invites students to seek help from tutors. She states, "There is no substitute for constructive feedback to enhance the depth and quality of a student’s writing." Mrs. Horn also urges students to join both school-sponsored organizations and professional organizations in their field of study, as well as to question and evaluate what they hear and read. Her teaching philosophy can best be summed up as, "Writing is a window of opportunity for growth, maturity, introspection, and evaluation. Frequently, it frees a cluttered mind, allowing the writer to focus on critical issues." She quotes an adage that says, "Only those who will risk going too far can ever find out how far you can go."
