GUST 0101 Success Seminars GUST 0101 is designed to help students succeed in College. This course provides an introduction to the nature of higher education and a general orientation of the available college resources at Houston Community College Systems. The purpose of the Student Success course is to assess the readiness of entering college students to enroll in freshman-level academic coursework and to assist students who are not yet reading by providing the advising and educational support they need to succeed in college. Topics explored in the course are: the college experience, learning styles, time management, getting organized, surviving math, stress management, reading strategies, note-taking, test taking, and career exploration.
GUST 0303 Study Skills/Orientation This course is designed to help students succeed in the college classroom. Students will learn time management and goal setting techniques, effective listening and notetaking skills, textbook-study methods, strategies for preparing and taking examinations as well as techniques to boost concentration and memory. Other topics include units on stress management, use of the college library and Internet, research strategies, and career planning. Also covered is adapting to academic regulations and improving personal and social adjustment to college.
GUST 0341 Reading I College Reading I is designed to address the developmental reader’s need for direct instruction in basic reading behaviors that are essential to the acquisition of knowledge in the content areas. Instruction is based on an interactive reading method with emphasis on learning to learn. These key skills include previewing chapters, selecting and organizing the information read and critical reading, making informed decisions about that information.
GUST 0342 Reading II College Reading II is a continuation of reading skills introduced in GUST 0341. Stronger emphasis is on critical reading and thinking skills. The goal of GUST 0342 is to teach students to analyze materials thoughtfully, synthesize materials from various sources, and apply this information to their reading.
